Small suppliers are finally being given protection from supermarkets in the form of an ombudsman, but the Forum of Private Business (FPB) is calling for further measures to help both suppliers and shops.

The FPB is welcoming today’s news that the Government has accepted a recommendation for a body to enforce the Groceries Supply Code of Practice (GSCOP). It was made by the Competition Commission in 2008 after a two-year inquiry into alleged abuses in the groceries market.

Free weekend parking is being introduced in Rotherham town centre from November 21st after 3.00pm and at the weekends to boost town trade in the run up to Christmas. The scheme applies to all council-operated car parks and on-street parking bays throughout each weekend and after 3.00pm for the rest of the week. Wirral Council, offered 'free after3' parking initiative on every Thursday for Birkenhead, Liscard and Heswell and West Kirby in the run up to Christmas.
The initiative funding was made possible by the Government's national cut in VAT from 17.5% to 15% last December 2008, which was not passed on to the public and would fund  the scheme.

In Knutsford we have seen increases in parking payable from April 1st 2009 and an increase in traffic wardens on our streets to help deter shoppers from parking in our town.

FPB and Accept Cards Ltd help firms save money on merchant services

The Forum of Private Business (FPB) is helping small businesses cut adrift by the providers of credit card merchant services or struggling with the cost of processing card payments.

The FPB has joined forces with Accept Cards Ltd (ACL) in order to reduce the expense of taking card payments and the hassle of seeking out alternative providers.

Many business owners are paying steep rates because they do not have the time or resources to shop around for a better deal. Some are not aware they can use the credit card merchant services provided by lenders other than their existing banks.

Hopefully many of you will have seen the window display, 'love Knutsford,'at the shop on Canute square, which arrived last week. The next bit of the jigsaw has been production of the ‘taste Knutsford ‘ promotion which started from yesterday, funded by Cheshire East Council as part of its Recession mitigation plan through the visitor economy ‘event towns’ project. This is being distributed initially via the featured businesses, the TIC and at the Tatton food lover’s fair. Every car arriving at Tatton for this event is being given a copy and it is also available via the info cabin and the Housekeeper’s Store. This makes the distribution very targeted on a discerning ‘foodie’ audience.
